The problem with online conversation is that there is no context or voice, and so if something is meant to be a joke, or sarcastic the writer basically has to say "by the way, I didn't actually mean what I just said, I thought that the irony of the statement would make you laugh." I have had a few (one that i can remember off hand) drastic misunderstandings because someone said something sarcastically which i replied to as though it was literal... not cool. These situations can easily be avoided with the use of a :P or 'lol'.
Having said that, I think they are horrendously overused.
...and I definately don't think lmao and rofl should ever be used... if youre rolling on the floor you're probably not typing, and if you've laughed your ass off, you should have bigger priorities than telling your friends about it.

Well, I'll say this much. I do not type 'LOL' unless I actually audible laugh or chortle. Otherwise I will write 'ha' or 'heh.'

Hi Mark, sorry to hear you are having tech probs. I hope all will be back to normal soon. I presume you may be aware of that already but just to make sure, the rss button on this (wordpress) blog does not work, at least for me.

The reason for typing lol is that you put it in the place where you would laugh or chuckle IF you were actually talking with someone face-to-face. Laughing and smiling is a natural part of conversation and human interaction that puts the other person at ease. The same meaning is not transmitted virtually if you don't indicate, in some manner, the places where these social graces would have gone, if the conversation had actually occurred face-to-face.
