Brain Broadcast – Journalism and Celebrities October 18, 2007

I was catching up on some blogs when a story caught my eye.  I read a recent post on Clicked which referenced stories involving Rush Limbaugh and Randi Rhodes (a talk show host on Air America, a “liberal” talk radio network).   N.B. - I am assuming that the reader already knows who Limbaugh is.  I’m not up to explaining Limbaugh at the moment.

These stories involve media personalities who are making news themselves, either through events that happen to them (an apparently erroneous report claimed that Rhodes had recently been mugged) and how other members of the press (and I use that term loosely) appear to be trying to feed off their popularity/infamy.

Isn’t it odd that we live in a world where the journalist can eventually become a celebrity, where the news hunter eventually turns into prey when they themselves become successful?  Is it a natural phenomenon of journalism?

Today the little guy can’t get press credentials to cover the US Congress, among other things. I think the mainstream media need to release their stranglehold.

I think I’m getting lost in a sea of blogs, social bookmarking, linking, networking, etc.  While it’s fun and kind of exciting to explore this new frontier, I don’t really feel like I’m getting anywhere, nor do I seem to have much in the way of direction or planning.

I’m doing stuff on Helium.  I posted on Triond.  I’m trying out Newsvine.  I’ve been trying to build up networks on Digg, Netscape, Reddit, and I also posted on Shoutwire.  I’m building up Del.icio.us bookmarks like mad.  I’ve been using StumbleUpon (neat idea, incidentally).  This blog is in both Blog Catalog and Technorati.

So what am I really trying to acheive here?  Fame?  Fortune?  Self-expression?  New opportunities?

All of the above, to some extent, but man oh man right now I feel like I’m on a bullet train with the windows down.

I suppose this feeling is natural as I explore all of these things.  Clearly, until you know how much you don’t know about a topic, it’s hard to ask meaningful questions and sometimes you don’t really know what you want until you see some examples.

Maybe this is how some of my clients feel.

I wrote a short article yesterday concerning information in the mass media.  Common sense would dictate that some of this information will be inaccurate or incomplete.  How do you protect your own interests and get a good grip on the truth, given the multitude of data flying around the Web and other media.
What do you think?
